Valdosta — The Southern Georgia Black Chambers (SGBC) convened on September 26 to celebrate the restart and new ownership of Fin & Feathers Valdosta, located within the bustling commercial corridor of the Valdosta Mall. The event marked the formal acquisition of the high-profile restaurant and lounge by business acquisition strategist Marvin Terrell and his son, managing operator Alex “TJ” Terrell. This transition, as described by the chamber, represents an institutional milestone in enterprise scaling and brownfield business turnaround, signaling a transformative shift from late-night friction to family-centered destination dining.
The Terrell family is deploying a rigorous operational repositioning blueprint, aiming to move past legacy operational challenges. Their strategy includes elevating daytime food service, strictly enforcing venue safety and decorum, and cultivating an environment designed to serve as a civic gathering place for professionals, educators, and traveling executives. Marvin Terrell, a seasoned corporate strategist who previously spoke at the SGBC Small Business Expo on mergers and corporate acquisitions, emphasized that scaling Black commerce requires moving beyond ground-up startup struggles into institutional acquisitions.
Since assuming management earlier this year, ahead of the formal closing, the Terrells have engineered significant cultural and structural turnarounds, according to the SGBC. The chamber reported that incidents of noise and disruption have ceased, and daytime foot traffic has climbed substantially. This increase in patronage draws regular daytime patrons, corporate lunch crowds, and regional educators to the Valdosta Mall location. Marvin Terrell added that their objective is to make Fin & Feathers an indispensable civic asset, expanding into leadership enrichment meetings, corporate networking receptions, and daytime culinary excellence.
During the ceremony, SGBC leadership framed the re-launch within a historical continuum of Black-owned hospitality infrastructure. H. DeWayne Johnson, president and CEO of the Southern Georgia Black Chambers, stated that a restaurant of this scale is physical infrastructure where business, community, and municipal policy converge. Johnson continued that the Chamber’s mission is to ensure enterprises are backed by the institutional authority required to sustain them, asserting that Fin & Feathers has the full weight of the SGBC ecosystem behind them for navigating city relationships, corporate procurement, or statewide tourism.
As part of their formal alignment with the SGBC, Fin & Feathers entered the Chamber under an upgraded Executive Level membership. This membership extends their active accreditation through December 2027. The enterprise agreement includes a dedicated half-page corporate profile in the statewide glossy publication SGBC Magazine, which is distributed in partnership with AcknowledgeMINT across South Georgia and additional major markets in Georgia, including metro Atlanta. Other benefits for Fin & Feathers include fairway signage during the 2027 Annual SGBC Golf Tournament and featured executive hospitality status during the chamber’s future summit.
SGBC Executive Board members in attendance at the ceremony included Larry Johnson Jr., who serves as membership engagement lead, Marion Ricco Ramsey, the VP of Operations, and SGBC Student Associate Jaiquan Littleton from Valdosta State University. Fin & Feathers Valdosta is open for daily dining, corporate lunches, weekend family outings, and private event reservations.
