The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) announced it will begin installing new safety improvements at the intersection of State Route 300 and State Route 32 in Worth County. These measures are set to start on November 1 and are a direct response to a series of serious accidents that have occurred at this key intersection in recent years. For residents, commuters, and those traveling through Worth County, this change aims to enhance safety on a critical transportation artery.

GDOT crews will implement a temporary “reduced conflict U-turn,” or RCUT, design at the junction. This specific type of road design is intended to restrict certain traffic movements and reduce the potential for collisions, particularly angle crashes, on the major highway. The design fundamentally alters how traffic from State Route 32 will interact with State Route 300. Drivers approaching State Route 300 from State Route 32 will no longer be able to cross directly or make a left turn. Instead, these drivers will be required to turn right, proceed to the nearest exit median, and then execute a U-turn to continue in their desired direction. Importantly, the movement of traffic on State Route 300 itself will remain unchanged by this temporary installation.

The decision to implement the RCUT comes after the intersection has been the site of multiple crashes. These incidents include a significant accident in August that resulted in two fatalities, underscoring the urgency of addressing safety concerns at the location. The installation of the RCUT is a proactive step by GDOT to mitigate risks while a more permanent solution is being planned.

Worth County officials had previously expressed objections to the RCUT design, leading GDOT to explore alternative long-term solutions. In June, the state agency announced a shift towards a possible roundabout plan for the intersection. This plan was further confirmed by GDOT in August, with the agency stating that a roundabout will indeed be constructed at the site. However, the permanent roundabout project is still several years away from completion, currently slated for Fiscal Year 2029. This extended timeline means the temporary RCUT design will serve as an interim safety measure to protect motorists in the coming years.

The temporary RCUT installation is expected to be completed in December. Once finished, it will reroute traffic from State Route 32, forcing a right turn followed by a U-turn maneuver, thereby eliminating the higher-risk left turns and cross-traffic movements that have contributed to past incidents. This temporary solution provides an immediate safety enhancement for the community until the more extensive roundabout project can be realized in the future. Local residents and daily commuters should familiarize themselves with the new traffic patterns beginning November 1 to ensure a smooth and safe transition through the intersection.
