VALDOSTA — The Lowndes County Board of Education has been awarded the Georgia School Boards Association’s (GSBA) 2026 Exemplary Governance Team Recognition, marking the highest level of achievement available through GSBA’s Governance Team Recognition Program. The recognition was formally presented during the board’s Oct. 5 meeting, highlighting the board's commitment to robust leadership and continuous improvement for Lowndes County Schools.
Superintendent Sandra Wilcher commended the board, stating that a strong school system relies on a school board that "keeps students at the center of every decision.” Wilcher expressed gratitude for the seven board members and their dedication to serving students, staff, families, and the broader community, emphasizing their role in advancing Lowndes County Schools.
This Exemplary designation is awarded to school governance teams that consistently uphold the highest standards across several key areas: effective leadership, accountability, collaboration, transparency, and a drive for continuous improvement. Board Chairman Mike Davis, who has served on the board for 24 years, acknowledged the honor, stating his pride in the board's collective work and the significance of this top-tier recognition.
To attain Exemplary status, the Lowndes County Schools governance team successfully met rigorous criteria established by the GSBA. These criteria are based directly on the State Board of Education’s Standards for Effective Governance. The recognition underscores a shared commitment to the students of Lowndes County.
Superintendent Wilcher further elaborated that the recognition reflects what she calls “One Lowndes,” a collaborative approach focused on student welfare. Wilcher noted that the board members consistently ask important questions, make thoughtful decisions, and remain dedicated to their core mission. She expressed deep appreciation for their leadership, their support for school staff, and their efforts in creating opportunities for all students to succeed within the school system.
The Lowndes County Board of Education is comprised of seven members representing different districts: Mike Davis (District 1), who serves as Chairman; Fred Wetherington (District 2), the Vice Chairman; Erin Price (District 3); Jason Wisenbaker (District 4); Robert McGeehan (District 5); Melanie Hasty (District 6); and Chris Buescher (District 7).
Chairman Davis also highlighted the crucial role of community support in the board's ability to operate at an exemplary level. He stated that the citizens of Lowndes County, through their ongoing support of the schools, make this important work possible. Davis emphasized the board's commitment to keeping taxpayers and citizens at the forefront of their decisions, acknowledging that community backing allows them to continue serving schools and the community effectively.
The GSBA’s Governance Team Recognition Program, established in 1998 by Georgia superintendents and school board members, is notable as one of the first programs of its kind in the nation. Its purpose is to acknowledge Georgia school governance teams for their consistent commitment to effective governance and ongoing development. The program includes three distinct levels of recognition: Quality, Distinguished, and Exemplary, with the Exemplary designation representing the pinnacle of achievement within the framework.
