VALDOSTA — Pink flamingos are returning to South Georgia communities this October as First Commerce Credit Union and the SGMC Foundation kick off the 2026 #FlamingoChallenge, an annual fundraiser dedicated to assisting local patients battling breast cancer. The initiative invites individuals, businesses, and community groups across Valdosta, Adel, Nashville, and surrounding areas to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Every dollar raised through the local challenge directly benefits the Pearlman Cancer Center at SGMC Health and the patients it serves. Participants make a donation and, in return, receive a flock of pink flamingos and accompanying yard signs to display at their homes or businesses, creating a visible show of support for those impacted by breast cancer.
Organizers stated in a press release that the funds collected are crucial for removing barriers to treatment. They help cover essential services such as imaging scans for uninsured and underinsured patients, provide lodging and transportation assistance for individuals traveling for treatment, and address other vital medical and nonmedical expenses that can impede access to care.
Hilary Willis, executive director of the SGMC Foundation, underscored the local impact of the campaign, stating, "Every dollar raised stays right here in our community, helping remove barriers to treatment and providing hope for patients and families facing a cancer diagnosis."
First Commerce CEO Cecilia Homison also highlighted the power of community involvement, noting that supporters understand their participation contributes meaningfully, offering comfort and support to individuals and families navigating a breast cancer diagnosis.
Joining the #FlamingoChallenge this October involves three straightforward steps. First, prospective participants are asked to make a donation, which can be done by visiting FirstCommerceCU.org/Flamingo online or by stopping by any of First Commerce’s three financial centers in Valdosta, as well as its locations in Adel and Nashville. Second, participants are encouraged to display their received pink flamingos and yard signs prominently at their homes or businesses to publicly demonstrate their support. Finally, individuals are asked to spread the word by sharing photos on social media using the hashtag #FlamingoChallenge, encouraging others to join the cause.
Businesses also have opportunities to contribute to the fundraiser. According to the press release, they can raise funds through methods such as checkout round-ups, donating a portion of sales, featuring special menu items, or organizing dedicated fundraising events.
The Valdosta community has a strong track record of supporting the #FlamingoChallenge. In 2025, the effort raised more than $20,800. Since the fundraiser's inception, total support for the Pearlman Cancer Center has reached nearly $100,000. Additionally, First Commerce’s broader campaign, which operates across North Florida and South Georgia, has cumulatively raised nearly $700,000 for patients and hospital programs since its launch in 2020.
