South GeorgiaLEADS is now accepting applications for its 2027 Women’s Leadership Initiative, a program designed to empower women and strengthen professional and personal leadership skills across South Georgia. The deadline for applications is November 15, for a program set to begin in January and conclude in June of next year, according to a press release from the organization. This initiative offers a significant opportunity for residents of Valdosta, Lowndes County, and surrounding communities to develop as leaders and contribute to the region's vitality.
The Women’s Leadership Initiative, launched in 2023, has been a key part of South GeorgiaLEADS’ regional development efforts since its inception. The program, designed by women for women, provides a unique opportunity for participants to engage in meaningful conversations and learn from experienced leaders and peers. It also allows them to explore the challenges and opportunities facing women throughout the region, the press release noted.
South GeorgiaLEADS emphasized that the WLI builds upon its commitment to developing informed, engaged leaders who contribute to the economic and civic vitality of South Georgia. The initiative brings together women from diverse professional backgrounds, including business, education, healthcare, nonprofit organizations, government, and community leadership.
Through a combination of interactive sessions, networking opportunities, and regional experiences, participants gain valuable insight into issues affecting women. They also build relationships that extend beyond their individual communities, as stated in the press release. Tommie Beth Willis, who serves as the 2027 WLI Program Chair, remarked that bringing together strong, talented women creates "incredible things" when they are passionate about their communities. Willis added that the initiative helps these women connect, grow, and inspire one another, strengthening the future of South Georgia.
The 2027 Women’s Leadership Initiative will hold sessions in six different South Georgia counties, each focusing on topics relevant to women’s leadership and the evolving needs of the region. The program's schedule includes an Opening Retreat in Colquitt County on January 21–22. Subsequent sessions will cover specific themes:
– February 11, Tift County: Women in Business and Agriculture. – March 11, Worth County: Nonprofit Management and Board Governance. – April 8, Randolph County: Self-Care, Healthcare, Caregiving and Rural Health. – May 13, Coffee County: Policy and Politics. – The program will conclude on June 3–4 in Decatur County with sessions on Personal Branding, Second-Half Life and Retirement Planning, followed by an Empowerment Celebration and Luncheon.
South GeorgiaLEADS states that the initiative aims to strengthen a network of women who support one another’s personal and professional growth. This collective effort is intended to address challenges, identify opportunities, and advance the region.
The cost to participate in the 2027 program is $1,200. A limited number of scholarships may be available, according to the organization. Applicants must submit their applications by November 15 and should be prepared to provide two letters of reference as part of the process.
This program offers a structured path for women in Valdosta and across South Georgia to deepen their leadership capabilities and forge connections that can benefit their careers and their communities.
