A 15-year-old girl tragically died on October 21 after she was struck by a vehicle while riding an electric scooter, authorities have confirmed. Police officials have reported that charges have since been filed against the driver involved in the fatal incident. The collision occurred on Racetrack Road during the afternoon hours, claiming the life of the teenager. The family of the victim identified her as Torrianne Mortensen.
According to precise details released by police, the fatal collision took place at approximately 3:08 p.m. on Racetrack Road. Investigations conducted by law enforcement indicate that Torrianne Mortensen was operating her electric scooter, having ridden it from the nearby Saguaro Park Trail. Police further specified that at the time of the incident, she was actively engaged in crossing Racetrack Road. Critically, she was within a clearly marked crosswalk when the impact occurred. Other vehicles on the roadway, specifically those traveling in an adjacent lane, had reportedly begun to slow down or had come to a complete stop to allow the 15-year-old girl to complete her crossing, according to official police accounts. This established protocol for pedestrian safety was observed by some motorists.
However, the sequence of events changed when a southbound 2012 Nissan Rogue approached the scene. Police confirmed that this vehicle proceeded to maneuver from behind the already slowed or stopped vehicles. The Nissan Rogue then entered the marked crosswalk without decelerating or stopping, failing to yield to the pedestrian. It was at this point that the Nissan Rogue subsequently struck Torrianne Mortensen, causing severe injuries. Following the critical collision, the young girl was immediately transported to a local hospital for urgent medical attention. Despite efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, authorities stated.
Authorities identified the driver of the Nissan Rogue as Michael Stanton, who is 64 years old. Police have since formally charged Michael Stanton in connection with the fatal crash that resulted in the teenager's death. The specific charges brought against him include vehicular manslaughter, a serious offense related to the unlawful killing of another human being due to negligence in operating a vehicle. Furthermore, he faces charges for failure to exercise due care for a pedestrian, emphasizing a motorist's responsibility to watch out for individuals on foot. The third charge is overtaking a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk, highlighting the legal requirement to stop when other vehicles yield to pedestrians. These charges were formally reported by the police. Investigators with the police department stated that their review of the incident found no evidence that either impairment, such as drug or alcohol influence, or excessive speed were contributing factors in the crash. Police further noted that the driver, Michael Stanton, remained at the scene of the accident immediately following the collision and cooperated fully with all aspects of the ongoing investigation by law enforcement officials.
