Valdosta and Lowndes County jointly observed National Manufacturing Week on October 1, 2026, with a special proclamation ceremony and a detailed tour of the Steeda facility, a Ford manufacturer in Valdosta. The annual observance aims to recognize and educate residents about the significant role local manufacturing industries play within the community.
The event, hosted by Steeda this year, continued a tradition that previously saw a proclamation read at Hunt Industries. The ceremony commenced with remarks from Brad Folsom, chairman for Valdosta-Lowndes Development Authority, and Scott Boda, Steeda’s director of manufacturing. Both speakers highlighted the critical importance of manufacturing to the economic vitality of Lowndes County.
Folsom specifically acknowledged the daily commitment of manufacturing workers, noting the extensive effort involved in their work. He stated that even if not often highlighted, the work done on production lines by those who get up “before sunrise to clock in” is what “drives our economy here in Lowndes County.”
Boda provided context on Steeda’s decision to establish operations in Lowndes County. He outlined three primary factors: the favorable cost of doing business in the area, the valuable workforce development programs offered by Wiregrass Technical College, particularly their CDC and welding programs which supply necessary competitive skills, and the strategic location near major transportation arteries like I-10 and I-75.
Following the speeches, County Chairman-At-Large Bill Slaughter and City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tempore Andy Gibbs presented a joint proclamation officially recognizing National Manufacturing Week. Niki Ogletree, president and CEO at Valdosta-Lowndes County Development Authority, concluded the formal portion of the ceremony with final remarks.
Guests then embarked on a comprehensive tour of Steeda's Valdosta facility. The initial stop showcased the company's latest vehicle models, which included specialized cars provided for the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and the Valdosta Police Department.
The tour further demonstrated Steeda's intricate manufacturing process, guiding participants from the building of individual parts through to the final assembly of vehicles. Boda personally led the tour, stopping at each stage of production to offer a behind-the-scenes look at the operational steps.
The experience concluded with an interactive opportunity for guests. Attendees were encouraged to participate in a test ride of one of Steeda’s iconic Ford Mustangs. Boda personally provided a brief ride in one of these vehicles, showcasing its speed and control to the participants.
