Lowndes County residents are invited to participate in the inaugural Lowndes Longest Table event this Sunday, November 15, at 4 p.m., taking place under the James Beck Overpass in Valdosta’s Historic Southside District. The free event, organized by One Valdosta-Lowndes (OVL), aims to foster stronger community relationships, build trust, and encourage civic engagement among residents from diverse backgrounds and neighborhoods.
Mary Beth Brownlee, director of One Valdosta-Lowndes, emphasized the event's importance, stating, "From the very beginning, bringing our community together through a Longest Table event has been a priority of One Valdosta-Lowndes." Brownlee noted that when OVL was established, community members expressed a clear need to improve communication and build stronger relationships throughout the area. She described the Lowndes Longest Table as a mechanism designed to build trust and facilitate open discussions about shared aspirations and needs, embodying the vision of 'one community' that is central to OVL's mission.
Brownlee clarified that the initiative extends beyond a single afternoon of conversation. The primary goal is to gather resident voices and feedback, which will then be shared with local governments, schools, parks and recreation departments, and other organizations. This input is intended to help guide future decisions and projects that affect the community.
Looking ahead, Brownlee also outlined plans to bring the Lowndes Longest Table to different communities each year. While Valdosta hosts the inaugural event, future iterations are planned for areas including Hahira, Dasher, Lake Park, and Remerton. She encouraged all Lowndes County residents to participate in the upcoming event, regardless of their specific location, highlighting it as an opportunity for everyone to celebrate local communities and work towards a more connected Lowndes County.
Community excitement is evident, with more than 150 volunteers dedicating their time to bring the event to life. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy special menus created by several popular local restaurants and food vendors, including Mo’s Mediterranean, Big Nick’s, Woodstack BBQ, Jethro’s Seafood, and Chef Acree. Jessie’s Restaurant will also provide kid-friendly meal options for younger guests.
While the Lowndes Longest Table is free and open to the public, advance online registration is required to participate. Residents planning to attend are encouraged to arrive early to ensure their preferred meal selection.
