VIDALIA, GA — A former police sergeant with the Vidalia Police Department, Santonio Wilcher, age 37, of Lyons, GA, was arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) on October 19, 2026. Wilcher faces charges of two counts of Misuse of a License Plate Reader System and one count of Violation of Oath of Office, according to GBI officials. The arrest stems from an investigation initiated by the Vidalia Police Department (VPD) into allegations of employee misconduct related to the use of a law enforcement system.
The investigation began on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, when the Vidalia Police Department formally requested the GBI's assistance. This request followed an internal audit conducted by the VPD regarding its Flock Safety System. This audit reportedly brought to light concerns about an employee's access and usage of the sophisticated license plate reader technology. Preliminary information gathered during the GBI's investigation indicates that Wilcher allegedly accessed the Flock system on multiple occasions for purposes not related to official law enforcement duties.
The Flock Safety System is a widely used technology that employs cameras to capture license plate information, aiding law enforcement in various investigations, including tracking stolen vehicles or suspects in criminal cases. The charges against Wilcher specifically relate to the alleged misuse of this system for activities outside the scope of police work. The Violation of Oath of Office charge underscores the seriousness with which authorities view alleged breaches of public trust by law enforcement personnel.
Following his arrest, Santonio Wilcher was booked into the Toombs County Jail. At the time of his arrest and the ongoing investigation, Wilcher is no longer employed with the Vidalia Police Department, according to information released by the GBI. The departure from the department preceded the public announcement of the charges and arrest.
The investigation into this matter remains active and ongoing, the GBI confirmed. Investigators are continuing to gather information related to the alleged misuse of the system. Once the GBI's investigative process is complete, the entire case file will be compiled and turned over to the Middle Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for a comprehensive review. The District Attorney’s Office will then determine how to proceed with the prosecution of the charges against Wilcher.
