Colquitt Regional Health System broke ground on a new four-story medical tower in Moultrie, Georgia, on Monday, Sept. 21, marking a significant step toward expanding healthcare access for residents across South Georgia, including those in Valdosta and surrounding counties. This substantial development is projected to be completed by May 2028 and aims to notably increase bed capacity and the number of available physicians, alongside generating almost 500 new jobs across various hospital departments. The expansion is set to bolster the regional healthcare infrastructure, offering more options for local families.

Nicole Stringer, Director of Development at Colquitt Regional Health System, indicated that the decision to expand was driven by a substantial increase in patient volumes, particularly in surgery and obstetrics areas. Stringer also highlighted that market share data reveals patients are traveling from a broad geographic area to receive care at the facility, specifically noting inflow from Tifton, Thomasville areas, and Valdosta. This trend underscores a growing demand for medical services that the new tower is designed to address, ensuring more patients can access critical care closer to home.

The importance of this healthcare expansion for rural communities was emphasized by Dr. Woodwin Weeks, Chief Academic Officer and Chief of Pediatrics at the hospital. Dr. Weeks explained that in rural areas like Moultrie, Colquitt County, and neighboring counties, expanding access to healthcare is more critical than ever. He further clarified that providing local care is particularly vital for many patients, especially those from single-income or single-vehicle families. Offering services locally prevents these residents from having to travel "two or three hours down the road" for essential doctor’s appointments, surgeries, or other medical care, thereby alleviating significant logistical and financial burdens for many households.

The new tower, named after Steve and Teresa Hufstetler in recognition of their generous $5 million donation to the project, will dramatically increase Colquitt Regional Health System's bed capacity from 99 to 155. Beyond the physical expansion, the project is also expected to enhance the medical workforce by bringing 35 new providers across multiple specialties to the region. The creation of nearly 500 new jobs across various hospital departments represents a significant economic boost and new employment opportunities for the area's residents.

In addition to the direct patient care and employment benefits, the development is anticipated to stimulate an increase in healthcare-related local spending. This economic activity, combined with the enhanced medical capabilities and expanded services, is expected to improve the hospital's overall status and its ability to recruit top medical talent to the region. The full impact of this expansion, promising both advanced patient care and substantial economic growth, is expected to materialize upon the tower's anticipated completion in May 2028.
