MOULTRIE, Ga. – Students with diabetes in the Colquitt County School District are now receiving additional support during their school day, thanks to a community initiative. The Moultrie Federated Guild, a local community service group, is providing what they call ‘Diabetes crash boxes’ to every school across the district. These boxes are designed to offer quick access to necessary items for students managing their condition throughout school hours, ensuring they have immediate assistance when needed.

The ‘Diabetes crash boxes’ contain essential snacks that can help regulate blood sugar levels, which is crucial for students with diabetes. These typically include items such as Goldfish crackers, fruit snacks, peanut butter crackers, and various juices. The consistent availability of these specific supplies within schools ensures that students have direct access to support, minimizing potential health complications and disruptions to their learning and daily routine.

The initiative directly addresses a recognized need within the school system, according to school officials. Kristen Dekle, one of the school nurses, highlighted the growing demand for managing chronic medical conditions among students in the district. Dekle noted that diabetes represents a significant portion of this increasing need within the broader community served by the Colquitt County schools. The presence of these crash boxes directly responds to the challenges students and their families face in effectively managing such conditions during school hours.

The idea for this vital program originated when a school nurse reached out to the Moultrie Federated Guild, identifying a specific need for snacks to assist diabetic students throughout their school day. Upon receiving this request, the community service group took prompt action to address this gap. Donna Brinson, a member of the Guild, explained the group's process, stating they first assessed which schools had diabetic children. Following this, they determined the appropriate amount of supplies each school could receive, leading to the development and distribution of the crash boxes. This methodical approach ensured that resources were allocated effectively based on the actual presence of diabetic children in each school across the district.

The collaboration between local school nurses and the Moultrie Federated Guild demonstrates a proactive and effective effort to enhance student well-being in Colquitt County schools. For residents, commuters, parents, airmen and military families, VSU students and staff, farmers, and small-business owners in the broader South Georgia region, this support system offers crucial peace of mind. It ensures that students with chronic medical conditions, specifically diabetes, are better cared for and have immediate resources during the school day. This local effort underscores the significant role community groups play in augmenting the health resources available to educational institutions, ensuring that specialized health needs are consistently met for students in Moultrie and the surrounding areas of Colquitt County.
