Valdosta residents are invited to the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts this Saturday for the 2026 Turner Center Beyond the Book – A Literary Event. This annual celebration of the written word will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, in the Turner Center Galleries, located at 527 N. Patterson St. in Valdosta. This event offers a significant opportunity for the community to engage with local and regional literary talent and celebrate the power of storytelling.

According to Turner Center Executive Director Sementha Mathews, Ph.D., the event is designed to give authors a platform to display, discuss, and sell their published works. Dr. Mathews stated that "The event is free and open to the public," ensuring accessibility for all members of the community interested in literature and creative expression. With more than two dozen authors already confirmed to participate, attendees can expect a vibrant and diverse literary experience, showcasing a wide array of genres and writing styles from the South Georgia region and beyond.

Beyond author interactions, the literary event plans a variety of activities to engage visitors of all ages. Scheduled offerings include free art activities, providing a creative outlet alongside the literary focus. Book sales and signings will allow attendees to purchase works directly from the authors and have them personally inscribed, fostering a direct connection between writers and readers. Additionally, writing workshops will be available, offering aspiring authors and interested individuals the chance to hone their skills and gain insights into the craft of writing. These workshops aim to support and nurture the literary talent within the Valdosta and Lowndes County community.

A key highlight of the day will be the official launch of the 7th Annual Art of Writing Contest. This contest is specifically designed to encourage creative expression among area middle and high school students, fostering the next generation of writers in Valdosta and Lowndes County. The Art of Writing Contest is an integral part of the Turner Center’s broader literary initiatives, which also include the Young Writers League and the Writers League, demonstrating the center's commitment to supporting literary arts across different age groups and skill levels. The theme for this year’s contest will be revealed during the fair, building anticipation among potential young entrants. Students interested in participating should note that the entry deadline for the contest is January 15, 2027.

The 2026 Literary Event is made possible through the dedicated efforts and generous support of numerous organizations and individuals. Key supporters include the National Endowment for the Arts and the Georgia Council for the Arts, underscoring the event's cultural significance and broad recognition. Local community and business support is also vital, with contributions from Hug in a Mug Coffee Co, David and Kay Scott, Drs. Dennis and Patricia Marks, Snake Nation Press, and The Valdosta Daily Times. Further backing comes from the South Georgia Regional Library, Fig Leaves Christian Bookstore, The Bookshelf, and The Good Book & Red Door Coffee, all playing a crucial role in bringing this literary celebration to fruition for the community.

For the convenience of both vendors and patrons attending the event, food vendors will be on site throughout the day, ensuring that refreshments and meals are readily available.
