HAHIRA – Valwood High School in Hahira recently recognized former player Justin T. Hobdy, a member of the class of 2002, during a game against Calvary Christian on September 18. This event highlighted a cherished tradition within the school’s athletic program, celebrating Hobdy’s legacy and announcing the latest recipient of his former jersey number, senior wide receiver Rylan Neal, for the 2026 season.
The Valwood community experienced a profound loss on June 12, 2005, when Justin Hobdy passed away. Known as a beloved member of the Valwood family, Hobdy left an indelible mark on the school's football program, having played all four years of high school before his graduation in 2002. His talent and dedication were evident early on; he and his brother John were both starters on the Valwood team that clinched the State Championship in 1999. Justin also played alongside his brother Josh during the 2001 season.
During his senior year, Justin Hobdy garnered significant recognition for his athletic prowess. He was named All-Region, All-State, and All-Area, underscoring his impact on the field. That same year, he was selected to the GISA All-Star team, where he made an immediate impression by executing the first tackle on the opening kickoff of the game. To further commemorate his achievements and contributions, the framed jersey Justin wore during the 1999 state championship game is now displayed in a place of honor outside the Justin Taylor Hobdy All-Purpose Room, located within the Eager Sports Center.
In the immediate aftermath of Hobdy’s passing, then-coach Mike Patrick unofficially retired the No. 10 jersey following the 2005 season. For 16 years, the number was not issued to another player, serving as a silent tribute to Justin Hobdy’s memory. However, in 2022, the school community decided to re-issue the No. 10 jersey, transforming its meaning. It now serves as a dynamic symbol of honor, bestowed upon a student-athlete who consistently exemplifies the exceptional qualities and character that Justin Hobdy embodied, and which Valwood endeavors to instill in all its students.
The selection criteria for the No. 10 jersey are rigorous, seeking a player who demonstrates specific attributes. These include a remarkable attitude, an unwavering work ethic, and significant resilience. The chosen student-athlete must also possess leadership qualities that can notably influence the outcome of a game, shape the culture of their team, or elevate the overall quality of a season simply through their presence and effort. The school seeks a player whom any coach would eagerly desire on their team, recognizing individuals whose positive contributions to the broader athletic program are palpable. This impact is felt not only through their own athletic achievements but also through the positive influence they exert on others. The recipient must consistently display commitment, enthusiasm, school spirit, genuine concern for their teammates and peers, and an unyielding positive work ethic.
For the current 2026 season, senior wide receiver Rylan Neal has earned the distinction of wearing the symbolic No. 10 jersey. Neal, through his conduct and performance, represents the spirit of this honor. The school emphasizes that while Justin Hobdy was an exceptional football player, he was regarded as an even better person, prioritizing his family and friends above his love for the game. His enduring legacy continues to be upheld through traditions like this, ensuring he will not be forgotten, and will live on through players like Rylan Neal and future recipients of the No. 10 jersey.
