VALDOSTA – The Lowndes High Vikings shut out visiting Long County with a decisive 53-0 victory on Friday night, marking a Homecoming rout for the undefeated Vikings at Lowndes High School. The win brings Lowndes to a 5-0 record as they head into their first bye week of the season.
The Vikings displayed a potent offense, accumulating 388 total yards, comprising 221 passing yards and 167 rushing yards. Lowndes secured 19 first downs and controlled the ball for 17 minutes and 21 seconds. The 53 points scored represent a season-high for the Vikings, their highest total since a 56-0 shutout win over Mt. Zion in Week 2 of the previous season.
Senior running back Mason Woods led the ground attack, rushing for 81 yards and three touchdowns on only six carries, with scores from 5, 45, and 11 yards in the first half. Sophomore quarterback Jordan Parker delivered a perfect performance, completing all 11 of his passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns.
Wideout Kaevone Thomas was a primary beneficiary of Parker's accurate passing, finishing the night with eight catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns. His scoring plays included a 9-yard touchdown catch from Parker and an 84-yard touchdown catch and run that extended the Vikings' lead to 44-0 by halftime. Additionally, quarterback Trey Robertson contributed a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
The Lowndes defense also made its mark, contributing two safeties. Juju Hogan secured the first safety by tackling Long County’s punter in the end zone, making the score 37-0 in the first half. The second safety occurred with 8:51 left in the third quarter after a high snap resulted in the Blue Tide kicking the ball out of the end zone, pushing the score to 46-0 and initiating a running clock.
Long County, now holding a 1-3 record, struggled to generate offense throughout the game. The Blue Tide only crossed the 50-yard line once all night, on a 27-yard completion from Zayne Vaughn to Jason Scriven Jr. in the fourth quarter, reaching as close as the Viking 38 but never threatening to score. Long County never crossed their own 40-yard line voluntarily in the first half and appeared to adopt a ball control-centric game strategy to limit possessions.
Lowndes head coach Adam Carter commented on the game's objectives, stating that the contest “served its purpose” for the Vikings. He explained that the team anticipated a straightforward opponent, which allowed them to focus on discipline, reads, and physical play. Offensively, the team aimed to “spread some people out, work in space, try to get some confidence.” Carter expressed hope that the team would emerge from the game injury-free as they head into their bye week.
Looking ahead, Coach Carter acknowledged the defensive performance, noting that while the front played well, the secondary “given up some plays.” He emphasized the importance of using the bye week to improve physically in matchups upfront and to “get yourself ready for region” play. Carter also hoped the game helped the team find a clearer offensive identity by showcasing the capabilities of skilled players in open space and refining their tempo.
Coach Carter outlined the team’s focus for the upcoming week, stating that “the plan is just to keep pushing to get better in certain spots.” He indicated that the bye week would be dedicated to Lowndes itself, rather than an opponent, allowing the team to review the first five weeks, address issues, and find ways to improve.
Following their bye week, the Lowndes High Vikings will return to action on Friday, October 2, hosting Winter Haven (Fla.) at 8 p.m. Long County is scheduled to visit the Harlem Bulldogs on Friday, September 25, at 7:30 p.m.
