VALDOSTA — The Lowndes Vikings football team delivered a commanding 44-0 victory over Winter Haven (Fla.) on Friday night at Martin Stadium, extending their undefeated record to 6-0. Despite rainy conditions, the Vikings' powerful rushing attack and stingy defense proved overwhelming for their opponent, earning Lowndes its fourth shutout of the season.
The Vikings initiated scoring early in the game. On their opening possession, Malik Roman concluded a drive with a 3-yard touchdown run, establishing an early 7-0 lead for Lowndes. While two fumbles deep in Blue Devils territory in the first quarter prevented further scoring at that time, Lowndes maintained control of the game.
Lowndes Head Coach Adam Carter stated that the team had a clear plan, which the players knew and “executed and took it right down the field.”
The rushing game was a cornerstone of the Vikings' success, amassing 332 yards on 36 carries for an average of over 9 yards per attempt. Mason Woods led the ground attack, contributing 137 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Kaevone “KT” Thomas was another key offensive player, rushing seven times for 65 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to catching two receptions for 35 yards and another touchdown. Waylon Weidinger added 54 rushing yards on six carries, and Malik Roman finished with 42 yards and a touchdown on five rushes.
Coach Carter commented on the team's offensive strategy to ensure “certain kids get the ball.”
Beyond their dominant ground game, Lowndes also utilized its passing attack effectively, completing four of six passes for 61 yards. Jordan Parker completed both of his attempts for 35 yards and a touchdown. Waylon Weidinger also completed two of three passes for 26 yards and a touchdown. Overall, the Vikings accumulated 393 total yards of offense.
The defense played a pivotal role in securing the shutout, preventing Winter Haven from scoring any points and even recording a safety in the second half. Ronnie Mitchell led the defensive effort with five tackles. Marcus Vaughn and Fred Vaughn combined for the team’s only sack of the game. Coach Carter praised the defense, noting they were “playing extremely hard” and that the defensive front had performed “just as good as we’ve had since I’ve been here.”
Lowndes built a significant 28-0 lead by halftime and added 16 more points in the second half to solidify the 44-0 final score. Despite the decisive win, the Vikings identified areas for improvement, including three turnovers and eight penalties for a total of 61 yards. Coach Carter acknowledged these issues, referring to some actions as “bonehead mistakes” and emphasizing the need to fix “the silly stuff.”
Looking ahead, Lowndes is set to commence region play next week, hosting Camden County at 8 p.m. The Vikings will carry their undefeated record and strong defensive identity into this next phase of the season, a factor Coach Carter highlighted as crucial as their schedule grows tougher. He also emphasized the defense’s mindset, stating they “don’t want anybody scoring on them.”
