VALDOSTA – The Lowndes Vikings will kick off their Region 1-7A football schedule this Friday night, hosting the Camden County Wildcats at the Concrete Palace. The Vikings enter region play undefeated with a 6-0 record, having secured their sixth consecutive win last week with a dominant 44-0 victory over Winter Haven (Fla.). That win marked Lowndes’ fourth shutout performance of the season, showcasing a strong defensive effort in non-region games.

Camden County, with a 4-2 record, is expected to present a significant test, particularly with their offensive capabilities. The Wildcats arrive in Valdosta following a 33-8 win against West Broward (Fla.) last week. Throughout the season, Camden County has averaged 36 points per game, a statistic that Lowndes head coach Adam Carter acknowledged will challenge his team's defense, which has largely prevented opponents from scoring this year.

Coach Carter specifically pointed to the Wildcats' offensive prowess. “They’re very good on the offensive side,” Carter stated, also crediting Camden County’s Coach Tucker Pruitt for doing "a great job." Carter anticipates that the Wildcats will deploy "multiple packages" against the Vikings' defense.

A key component of Camden County's offense is senior quarterback Xavier Collins, who has demonstrated his passing ability, including a game against Godby this season where he threw for 214 yards and three touchdowns. However, a primary focus for the Vikings' scouting report will be senior player Sean Green. Green has had an impressive start to his season, accumulating 27 receptions for 477 yards and seven touchdowns. He averages 17.7 yards per catch and 79.5 receiving yards per game. Additionally, Green has contributed 67 rushing yards and one touchdown, bringing his total all-purpose yardage to 685.

Coach Carter recognized Green's talent, calling him "a great player" and "one of the best in the state." Carter admitted that stopping Green completely throughout the game will be difficult, stating, "There’s no way you’re going to stop him all game. You just have to limit what he can do.”

For Lowndes to succeed, the defense will need to elevate its performance. Coach Carter emphasized that the Vikings must be prepared to adjust to the various personnel packages Camden County's offense will present. “Our kids are going to have to learn how to play and adjust to these things,” Carter explained. He further stressed the importance of proper alignment before the snap and winning the physical confrontations, stating, "They have to be able to get lined up and we have to win the battle up front.”

On the offensive side for Lowndes, there remains uncertainty at the quarterback position as region play commences. Jayce Johnson, who typically starts, did not play in the game against Winter Haven and was observed on the sidelines wearing a knee brace. Coach Carter has not provided a timetable for Johnson's return to the lineup. In Johnson's absence, the Vikings have utilized junior Trey Robertson and sophomore Jordan Parker at quarterback.

Lowndes has largely depended on its rushing game during non-region contests. Last week against Winter Haven, the team achieved 332 rushing yards, with Mason Woods leading the effort with 137 yards and a touchdown. Despite their dominant win, the Vikings also faced challenges with execution, committing three fumbles and incurring eight penalties for a total of 61 yards. These unforced errors, according to the coaching staff, could prove costly in the tighter competition of region play.

Camden County has demonstrated resilience in close games this season, with both of their losses coming by only four points. They fell to Benedictine 27-23 and Ed White (Fla.) 48-44. This suggests the Wildcats are capable of competing in high-stakes situations.

Coach Carter underscored the demanding nature of the upcoming game, acknowledging, "We’ve got our work cut out for us Friday night.” He expressed hope that the home-field advantage at the Concrete Palace could provide an edge for the Vikings, remarking, "They come to our house, so I hope that can help us.” The Vikings will need to play at a higher level than they have in their initial six games to maintain their undefeated record in the crucial Region 1-7A opener.
