The Valdosta State Blazers defeated the Fayetteville State Broncos last Saturday morning in Valdosta, securing a commanding 38-9 victory. The win highlighted a strong showing from the Blazers on both sides of the ball, as the team prepares for an upcoming road game.
Valdosta State opened the scoring early in the first quarter with a defensive touchdown on the third play of Fayetteville State's initial drive. Chris Hayes forced quarterback Noah Marshall to fumble, and Curtis Janvier recovered the ball, returning it 41 yards for a scoop and score. Brett Fitzgerald successfully made the PAT, putting the Blazers up 7-0.
Fayetteville State responded with a 22-yard field goal, but the Blazers quickly answered. Valdosta State orchestrated a 12-play drive, capped off by a touchdown from Shawn Paschall. After forcing Fayetteville State into a three-and-out possession, VSU began its next drive promisingly as Paschall broke a long run for a first down. However, an interception by the Broncos on the subsequent play halted the drive.
The Blazers' defense forced another three-and-out from Fayetteville State, allowing Valdosta State's offense to get back into the end zone in just six plays. Junior quarterback Champ Harris connected with Kenai Grier for a touchdown, extending VSU's lead. The Blazers carried a significant 21-3 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
In the third quarter, Fayetteville State managed to score early with a quick touchdown drive, cutting Valdosta State's lead to 12 points. However, the Blazers swiftly countered. Facing a third-and-long situation on the ensuing drive, Champ Harris took matters into his own hands, ripping off a 43-yard touchdown run to push the lead back up.
Valdosta State's defense continued to hold Fayetteville State, preventing further scoring. Kicker Brett Fitzgerald then added a field goal, increasing the Blazers' lead to 22 points. The dominant performance continued into the final quarter. Late in the game, Gunnar Rogers forced a fumble, which Sergio Mason recovered in the endzone for another touchdown, sealing the 38-9 victory for Valdosta State.
Quarterback Champ Harris delivered his best game to date, excelling both through the air and on the ground. Harris completed 19 of 30 passes for 289 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for 59 yards and scoring a touchdown himself. Shawn Paschall led the Blazers' rushing attack with 66 yards and a touchdown on 16 attempts.
The Valdosta State passing game demonstrated efficiency, with multiple receivers contributing significantly. Jaheim Arnold finished the game with four receptions for 118 yards. Chris Lawson added three catches for 53 yards, and Kenai Grier recorded a pair of receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, the Blazers maintained a solid performance throughout the game. Jayden Bethea led the team in tackles with seven, while Ashton Heflin contributed five tackles. Jabari McMillian secured a pair of interceptions, and both Curtis Janvier and Sergio Mason were credited with a fumble recovery and a defensive touchdown.
The Valdosta State Blazers will now be on the road for their next game. They are scheduled to take on UNC Pembroke this Saturday, September 19, at 1 p.m.
