CHULA, Ga. – The Valwood Valiants clinched a challenging 28-20 victory over Tiftarea Academy on Friday night in Chula, Ga. The win, marked by a determined ground attack and crucial defensive plays, propelled Valwood’s season record to 4-1. The game remained closely contested until the final minutes, when the Valiants' defense made a pivotal stand to prevent Tiftarea from scoring a potential tying touchdown.
Valwood’s offensive success was largely driven by its rushing game. Senior quarterback Stanton Beverly played a dual role, scoring a rushing touchdown late in the contest and delivering a deep touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Greyson Bailey. Beverly also contributed significantly on defense, securing the Valiants' only interception of the night. Senior running back Kamari Jackson also found the end zone on the ground, highlighting the team's effective rushing performance throughout the physical matchup.
However, the Valiants faced several obstacles during the game. Tiftarea Academy effectively controlled extended portions of the game by executing long offensive drives. These lengthy possessions limited Valwood’s time on offense, making it difficult for the team to establish a consistent passing rhythm. Valwood head coach Brad Wells commented on this challenge, stating that the "biggest issue on offense is we just never could get in a rhythm," attributing it to the significant time between offensive possessions.
Further complicating matters for Valwood were numerous penalties and an expanding list of injuries. The team arrived at the Tiftarea game already contending with multiple injured players, and additional Valiants were sidelined during the course of the evening. This situation necessitated that several players adapt to unfamiliar positions and roles. Coach Wells acknowledged the substantial impact of these personnel losses, expressing the team's hope for the return of some players in the coming week. He also identified specific areas for defensive improvement, noting the necessity for better gap integrity on the defensive line.
Despite the accumulation of penalties, the ongoing injury concerns, and the limited offensive opportunities, the Valwood team maintained its performance level until the very end. The game's most critical sequence unfolded in the final minutes. With less than two minutes left, Tiftarea Academy advanced the ball deep into the red zone, posing a serious threat to score and potentially even the game. However, Valwood’s defense held strong, successfully stopping Tiftarea on a turnover on downs, thereby securing the 28-20 victory.
This hard-fought win improves Valwood’s record to 4-1 as they prepare for their next game. The Valiants are scheduled to play the 3-1 Calvary Christian Knights on Friday, September 18, at 7:30 p.m. The upcoming match will take place at Goddard Field, where Valwood aims to build on the momentum from this challenging triumph.
